The two-crash occurred at 9:41 p.m. at the intersection of Clifton Avenue and Montclair Avenue, Thomas Fennelly, chief assistant prosecutor in the homicide and major crimes unit for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.
Edwin, identified by a GoFundMe, was a passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the crash, Fennelly said.
The boy is being remembered on the campaign as a beloved son, brother, nephew and cousin.
As of Tuesday, Feb. 27, almost $11,000 has been raised.
Edwin visited El Salvador last Christmas, having met his grandparents for the first time. He was saving up money to visit them again, Dolores Barraza-Martinez, who organized the fundraiser said.
"Edwin was a gift to his mother, who sacrificed everything she had to offer him a better life," Barraza-Martinez said.
